National Forest of Fears

Bring comfortable shoes and clothes for the season and get ready to visit the great lung of the municipality.

Despite the name, there is nothing to be scared of: this area was ordered to be planted by King D. João V, with the aim of fixing the sand of the dunes - the fears - that invaded the agricultural lands of the interior.

If the day is sunny, come by bicycle. The body is grateful and so is the environment. There are 338 hectares of forest to discover, made of smells, colors, sounds and breathtaking views of the sea.

But, before making your way, remember: the natural heritage you will visit belongs to everyone, so carefully follow the rules posted throughout the landscape.

To get some advice and get a map and routes go to the Nature Interpretation Center, on the road to Fonte da Telha, next to the Fiscal Guard.

Sharpen the senses

The pine tree dominates the forest, but underneath their crowns, identify two of the various shrubs, such as the sabina of the beaches, with their red berries, and the strawberry tree, used to make brandy and liquor.

Now, test your sense of smell, discovering rosemary, thyme and sage, for example.

The observation of fauna is another hobby of nature lovers. With luck, you will be able to admire the serene flight of the round-winged eagle, the owl of the bush, the Galician owl and the kestrel. More rare are the visits of the peregrine falcon, goshawk and bonelli's eagle. On the ground, look for traces of the fox's passage, hedgehogs, rabbits, riders, badgers and reptiles.

And don't forget: the circulation is exclusively pedestrian and is limited to the trails already established. This network of paths is supported by eight picnic parks, equipped with garbage containers, roasters and informal parking.

Literature in the woods

Mata dos Medos is inserted in the Protected Landscape of the Arriba Fossil of Costa da Caparica, sculpted by the violence of the oceanic waves of the Quaternary Era and by the caprice of the various erosive elements, already after the emergence of the continents.

For this reason, the riches of this botanical reserve are numerous and very appealing to all ages. If the children are part of the group, take the Contos da Mata dos Medos and read these stories, featuring a hedgehog, a rabbit, a mole, a caterpillar and a titmouse. In the end, teach them to leave behind only footprints and to bring home only the memory of the riches found here.
